NIGEL Wright’s long and illustrious career looks over after the British Boxing Board of Control voted against renewing his licence.

Wright was forced to pull out of his British light-welterweight championship challenge at Peterlee last month following a failed brain scan.

SportMail reported that copies of his routine annual scan, which showed that he had suffered bleeding on the brain, must be examined by a panel of specialists.

That group of consultants have now confirmed the original findings and the BBBC voted unanimously not to allow the 32-year-old to box again.

It is another devastating blow to the Gus Robinson gym following the tragic death of Gus in November and the 11th hour withdrawal of Wright from his match against champ Ashley Theophane.

Nigel has the right to appeal the findings but his coach, Peter Cope, would like to see him bow out “gracefully” after a career of 24 wins and a draw from 31 contests.

Wright was undefeated in six English championship bouts and fought twice, unsuccessfully, for the British and Commonwealth titles.

“It’s a terrible, tragic day,” Cope said. “I feared when he had to pull out of the Theophane fight that this could be the end.

“Yes, you hope that the panel of experts find differently, but they haven’t.

“Nigel is devastated and that is understandable.

“I’m gutted for him and his family, myself and everyone in the Gus Robinson camp.

“Nigel could appeal and take the findings to an independent team of neurologists.

“But, from my point of view, I hope he decides to retire and go out gracefully.”
