Final agony for Amanda

AMANDA Coulson was today looking to get back on the road to fitness – after injury denied her a final clash with world champ Katie Taylor.

The "gutted" Hartlepool fighter was forced to pull out of her Ahmet Cup final showdown with the best girl on the planet because of a problem with her right shoulder.

Coulson told SportMail she was devastated to have been unable to defend the title she won in Turkey 12 months ago, but insisted getting ready for the EU Championship next month was her top priority.

And the 25-year-old now hopes the healing hands of West Hartlepool rugby physio, Michael Geritz, can get her fit for her next big tournament.

"I'm gutted that I couldn't make the final, but I've got to protect my arm," she said.

"The EU Championships are in Liverpool in seven weeks and I've got to be ready for them."

Despite the agony of missing out on a challenge against the world number one, Coulson says she can approach the event with confidence after a super run of form in Turkey.

"I boxed well throughout the tournament so that puts me in good stead for Liverpool," said the Catholic Club boxer.

"To be a finalist in Turkey for the second year running is very pleasing.

"I got the silver medal at a very high-profile championship which was some consolation, although I'd have liked to have had a go at Katie."

Coulson had been looking in great touch, especially after a crushing 25-7 win over Danish rival Gry Espensen in Friday night's semi-final.

The reigning champion had been feeling the problem against Espensen, but adrenalin got her through and she said she hoped for the same against Taylor.

"I'd been in loads of pain all night and my arm was a lot worse in the morning," she said.

"I'd taken pain killers and anti-inflamatorys but they did no good.

"I couldn't get my full reach or any power or snap with that arm.

"Fighting Katie is hard enough but you can't beat her with one hand.

"I was devastated about it, but I had to pull out rather than risk further damage."

It was a fine response by Coulson, who is sponsored by the Wilson Group, Sofa Bed Shop and Ultimate Security, following her surprise ABA Championship exit.
