Marshall sets sights on Olympics
SAVANNAH Marshall can today set her sights on the very top after being crowned European Union champion.
The teen sensation won gold at the EU tournament in Bulgaria where she hammered Spain's Tamara Garcia 15-2 in the Under 69 kilo final.
It was a magnificent performance in what was only her fifth bout in the senior ranks.
England team-manager Martin Webb declared: "In Savannah we have an 18-year-old kid for whom the sky really is the limit."
Marshall can now target the full European Championship in the Ukraine in the autumn and then the Worlds in Barbados.
And in the longer term there are the Commonwealth Games in India next year and the Olympics in London in 2012 – should women's boxing get the green light.
Her Headland ABC Coach Tim Coulter said: "I was told a while back by the England coach that it was going to be in the Commonwealth Games, but I've not had that confirmed.
"The International Olympic Committee are due to announce on August 13 if women's boxing will be on in London.
"That will certainly be something to aim for.
"She's only just turned 18 and she's going to get stronger as she matures and she's going to get better as a boxer.
"She said to me yesterday that she couldn't believe it.
"I told her 'you should believe it because you deserve to be where you are'.
"Savannah has shown how good she is and that's after only 17 contests and just five in the seniors.
"She's won the ABA Championship and now the EU in a matter of weeks and she can become one of the best in Europe and the World."
