Dave Prins loses to Richie George in world darts

GLORIOUS CHANCE: Dave Prins

GLORIOUS CHANCE: Dave Prins

LOCAL star Dave Prins will be kicking himself all the way back from Surrey to County Durham after losing in the first round of the BDO World Darts Championship.

The Horden and Peterlee left-hander had 15th seed Richie George on the ropes at the Lakeside in a gripping encounter.

But Prins could not land the knock-out blow and the 23-year-old from Essex took his chance for a 3-2 victory at Frimley Green.

The 44-year-old left-hander had darts at doubles for the victory in the fourth AND fifth sets but let the son of darts legend, Bobby, off the hook.

The match went to a deciding fifth set, where Prins had the advantage of throwing first in the first, third and fifth legs.

He duly won the opening leg before George took the second.

Prins clinched the third to lead 2-1 and he then looked set to take the fourth leg against the throw to clinch his best-ever Lakeside result.

The Co Durham man had three shots at a double to beat George – only to miss all three.

George punished him by taking out a finish of 107 to level the match.

The youngster then did not look back and reeled off two legs in a row with excellent finishes to win the deciding set 4-2 for a 3-2 triumph in sets.

Prins was gracious in defeat, smiling as he congratulated his victor at length on the stage, but he will regret not taking a glorious opportunity of ousting the number 15 seed.
