Young in Sevens heaven

IT'S all right for some isn't it?

Free flights out to Dubai and South Africa, plush hotels complete with mini-bar, plus a few mates to go with.

Sounds ideal, doesn't it.

I'm talking about one of Hartlepool rugby's high-fliers, Michael Young, who has been enjoying himself with England at the Dubai Sevens at the end of November and the Emirates Airline South Africa Sevens last weekend.

The Newcastle Falcons prospect, who was featured in this column in September after playing at Twickenham in the Help for Heroes Challenge match, is one of England's leading sevens exponents.

Last weekend, the quick and gifted former West scrum-half was in South Africa, where England lifted some silverware in George.

England had beaten Tunisia 47-7 and France 21-7 in their group but despite a 21-7 defeat to New Zealand they still went through to the knock-out stages.

However, they lost 17-12 to hosts South Africa, with Young touching down for one of England's two tries.

Despite defeat in the main tournament, they went through to the Plate competition.

There, England's magnificent seven – Young scoring again – beat Samoa 20-19 before seeing off Portugal 24-7 in the Plate final, Michael grabbing one of the four tries.

The previous weekend England reached the final of the Dubai sevens tournament against South Africa.

Michael was again on the scoresheet but unfortunately he finished on the losing side, the Springboks winning 19-12.

Well done though to Mr Young – you are doing yourself and your old club proud.
