DANNY Wilson is convinced new arrival Godwin Antwi has what it takes to be a smash hit at Victoria Park.
The 19-year-old on-loan Liverpool defender made his Hartlepool United debut in the 3-1 defeat to Newcastle United on Tuesday and fans left the ground raving about his performance.
The big stopper more than looked the part, especially during the first half when he got the better of £10million striker Obafemi Martins.
His evening got a little tougher in the second half when Michael Owen and Shola Ameobi entered the scene but Pools boss Wilson saw plenty in the opening 45 minutes to suggest the Ghana-born youngster is a star in the making.
With Michael Nelson coming back from summer surgery on a knee injury, Antwi is set to be given more game time in Holland next week, where Pools play three matches in just 72 hours against top class opposition.
"Godwin was excellent on Tuesday and it is worth remembering that he is only 19 and at that age you are going to make mistakes," Wilson said.
"It is all how you respond to those mistakes which matters and I saw in those first 45 minute enough to suggest to me that Godwin is going to have a great season.
"He will build and understanding with the back four and he will be a big help to us this year.
"He is strong and he wants to pass it – that is the way he has been brought up – and that will fit in here, I am looking forward to working with him.
He added: "In the first half against Newcastle he was up against Martins and Andy Carroll and he didn't give them much change.
"In the second half he was up against Owen and Ameobi, and while I am not saying anything against the other two, but those two are top quality and with a bit of tiredness creeping in as well it was going to be difficult."
Wilson is pleased with the make up of his squad as the prepare to jet out to Holland this weekend.
The Pools boss has snapped up six new players in keepers Jan Budtz and Arran Lee-Barrett, defenders Antwi, Robbie Elliott and Jamie McCunnie and striker Ian Moore, but he insisted he is still on the look out to strengthen even further.
The manager is unlikely to make another signing before heading to the continent but he has time on his side as the transfer window will remain open until the end of August.
"The season ahead will tell us how strong the squad is but at the moment I don't think anyone can argue with the quality we have brought in," Wilson said.
"Robbie Elliott has played his entire career at a higher level, as has Ian Moore, and in Antwi Liverpool have let us have a player who they rate very highly.
"When you add that to proven players who have come in such as McCunnie and the two good goalkeepers then there is no doubt that we have strengthened and we will continue to look to do so."
