A VINTAGE car enthusiast is set to bring five rallies to Hartlepool and East Durham including one in memory of a town man.

Northern Bygones Society has organised the shows to be held at a range of venues in the town over the summer.

The first will be held at Blackhall Community Centre on June 1 and will be followed on June 8 by what is expected to be their biggest in the town this year.

It is being held at Tesco in Burn Road, where the store has provided the group with 450 spaces, and a charity collected will be donated to the supermarket’s chosen charity.

An event is then being held at Hartlepool Rovers in West View Road on July 13 , followed by a two-day event at Hartlepool Old Boys Rugby Club in august 30 and 31.

The final, which will be called a Memorial Day for John Gillan, will be at Greatham Sports Field on September 28 and there will also be a trophy awarded in Mr Gillan’s name.

Mr Gillan was a club member from Hartlepool who created a newsletter and designed posters for the group before his death from cancer.

There will be a raffle at the event and the money raised will be donated to charity.

The Mail previously reported the society had to give way to a car boot sale which had booked the site on a day it wanted at Hartlepool Maritime Experience car park.

Organiser Paul Jackson said he is still open to discussions with the council on potential use of local authority sites for future rallies.

He added: “Three of the venues came after a story in the Mail and they have contacted us after reading about the Maritime Experience venue not being available.

“I want to thank the people of Hartlepool and Tesco and the other venues for allowing us to show our cars. We hope people will come along.”

Mr Jackson said Tesco has also agreed to allow the society to stage a rally on the National Drive It Day in April next year. People can contact the society on (01325) 312183 or 07968367438.
