TWO leading Hartlepool businessmen dug deep to back a council chief in his daring mountain climb to raise money for charity.

Damien Wilson, assistant director for regeneration at Hartlepool Borough Council, will climb in the Alps in mid-September in aid of the Mayor of Hartlepool, Councillor Stephen Akers-Belcher’s four nominated charities.

He intends to climb three mountains in the Alps over 4,000m, including Mont Blanc, crossing the dangerous Grand Couloir, where there are regular rock falls.

The 51-year-old should be in safe hands climbing with his cousin Mark Charlton, an Alpine guide, ski mountaineer and ice climber.

Damien has received a big sponsorship boost from Hartlepool entrepreneur Brian Morton, owner of several businesses in the town including the Hillcarter Hotel, Seaton Carew’s Sports Domes and Staincliffe Hotel, who has donated £1,000.

And Camerons Brewery managing director Chris Soley has added £500 from his company.

They have helped take Damien’s fundraising so far to more than £3,000.

He said: “To receive such generous backing from two of Hartlepool’s most prominent businessmen is marvellous and really spurs me on.”

The charities that will benefit from the expedition between September 14 and 21 are the RNLI, Hartlepool & District Hospice, Great North Air Ambulance and Miles For Men.

Brian Morton said: “Damien is a marvellous example of how people in Hartlepool go the extra mile to help others, and boy is he going the extra mile. I wish him an excellent trip and a safe return.”

Chris Soley, of Cameron’s added: “The mayor supports four very worthy charities and we are proud to be able to help him raise some much-needed money for them.

“We wish Damien the best of luck in his exhilarating adventure and look forward to hearing stories of his quest over a beer or two.”

Coun Stephen Akers-Belcher added: “Many, many thanks to Brian Morton, Camerons and everyone who has sponsored Damien so far.

“Damien is setting out on some truly epic fundraising, and the support which he is receiving from people and businesses across the town is truly inspiring.”
