A SEAFRONT chippy battered the competition for the second year running to be named the North-East’s best friers.
Fish Face, in Seaton Carew, was successful in the Choice Chip Awards, which is ran by the Potato Council.
The prize comes at the start of national Chip Week and is given to the shops serving up the tastiest treats across ten regions of the UK.
Manager Nicola Darley and the rest of the staff at Fish Face, on The Front, were thrilled to accept the prestigious title for the second year in a row.
Nicola, 27, said: “There’s no secret ingredients used in our chip making. We just make sure we use the highest quality potatoes and keep all the oil constantly fresh.
“After working in the business as long as us, you pick up a few tricks along the way.
“This award is for our customers as well who have supported us.”
The award is the latest in a string of honours for the shop on The Front.
In July, it was named among the top 50 chippies in the country and has also won awards for quality and conservation during the three years it has been up and running.
This year’s Choice Chip Awards saw over 840 chip shops enter the competition and 62,983 chip-loving voters took part in choosing their favourites.
Saltburn-based chip shop Brotton Chippy was named runner-up in the region.
Stu Baker, from the Potato Council, said: “Britain is truly a nation of chip lovers and Chip Week is a fantastic celebration of our great food tradition.
“It’s no surprise so many voted in the Choice Chip Awards this year. The British public feel very strongly about their local chippy and are prepared to take the trouble to vote to put their favourite on the map.”
“This has been a great start to Chip Week 2014, which will go on to see chip-themed festivities take place in shops, pubs, restaurants and retail outlets across the country.”
