HARTLEPOOL United players from bygone years will be among the walkers helping to raise vital funds for a hospice.

The fourth Peterlee and District Lions Club sponsored walk takes place this weekend and will feature a host of former Pools stars, with past and present staff.

The ex-players, whose current roles range from running a chip shop to coaching future stars, say the walk, in aid of Hartlepool & District Hospice, will be like a “big reunion”.

Other people are also welcome to join in the walk which has raised thousands of pounds in previous years and registration forms are available.

Those who have pledged to take part in the three-mile walk include ex-manager Chris Turner who is now chief executive at Sky Bet League Two champions Chesterfield, current kit man Martyn Brown and physio Ian Gallagher.

Meanwhile, former players set to pull on their walking boots include striker Kevin Henderson, former defender, coach and caretaker manager Micky Barron, Mark Tinkler, Graeme Lee, Ian Clark, John Brackstone, Glen Downey, Richard Forster, Paul Baker, Brian Honour and Tommy Miller, son of Lions founder member Tommy Miller senior.

Former Hartlepool Mayor and ex H’Angus mascot Stuart Drummond has also said he will take part, and organisers say it is hoped Hartlepool and Easington MPs Iain Wright and Graeme Morris will too.

The walk starts at The Hearts of Oak pub in Oakerside Drive, Peterlee from 10am this Sunday, May 11, taking in part of Castle Eden Dene.

Registration is from 9.30am.

Mr Miller senior said: “We are absolutely delighted to get support from the players.

“The hospice is over the moon as well.”

Organisers say last year the walk raised £2,000, with £1,750 and £1,500 raised in the previous two years.

They hope the total will be topped this year with the help of all the former footballers.

Registration forms can be obtained from Janice Forbes of the hospice on (01429) 855555 or by calling 07970189681.
