HARTLEPOOL children only have a few days left to enjoy free swimming at a leisure centre.
Hartlepool Borough Council has been running the swim scheme during the school summer holidays and it allows youngsters under the age of 16 to swim for free on weekday mornings at the town’s Mill House Leisure Centre.
The scheme operates until this Friday – which means children in town only have a few days left to take part. Sessions are held between 10am and 12.30pm.
Figures for the third week of the scheme are yet to be released but during the first ten days of the scheme there was a total of 3,320 children through the doors, a rise of 538 on last year.
Labour councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, leader of the council, said: “We are really pleased that it is proving popular again this year. It’s also encouraging to see that the number of adults accompanying children has risen too.”
Both the free swims and free transport are operated on a ‘first-come, first-served’ basis’. Children can choose to make their own way to Mill House but priority to the pool is given to those travelling on the free council buses.
