HARTLEPOOL United legend John McGovern will always be proud to be a Poolie.

Despite being born in Scotland, John grew up on the Central estate in Hartlepool after his family moved south when he was aged just seven.

He was spotted by Pools scouts as a youngster and played 72 games, scoring five goals, in his three-year spell at The Vic from 1965-68.

John famously followed Brian Clough to Derby County and then Nottingham Forest, where he lifted the European Cup on two occasions.

Now based in Sheffield and working as a media analyst covering Nottingham Forest on the radio, John was back in town last week for a fundraising dinner in aid of Billingham Town.

But before heading to Billingham, he couldn’t resist a look around his old stamping ground and took time to look up some old friends.

John said: “I was just a kid playing football with my mates on the Central Estate and I remember jumping on my bike and being so excited to learn the game with Pools.

“I always look out for their result each week and I owe them so much – from the Central Estate to holding the European Cup aloft was quite a journey!

“It’s always nice to come back to the town and see some familiar faces.”
