A WILDLIFE centre needs an extra pair of hands as it prepares to welcome new arrivals.

The RSPB Saltholme site, on the Seaton Carew Road near Hartlepool, will be welcoming new-born lambs within the next month.

But because it is such a busy time of year for the site, officials are hoping more volunteers will come forward and help out.

Every year, lambs are born to the Shetland sheep at the nature reserve and the public are given the opportunity to see them up close.

Saltholme’s warden, Emma Birnie, said: “Volunteers are crucial to the success of the reserve as a whole, but at this time of year an extra pair of hands or two becomes crucial.

“We desperately need one or two people for a month or two to help with the lambs. It is a wonderful experience to be a part of bringing lambs into the world and watching them take their first steps.”

Saltholme marketing officer Lydia Tague said: “This is our favourite time of the year, we all pull together and get involved because we love to do it.

“It’s such rewarding work when you can see the lambs playing in the field with their mother; it is a privilege to be a part of.”

The team are expecting the lambs to start arriving this month, with lambing in full swing by the Easter holidays when Saltholme will be hosting their Lambing Live event.

Lydia said: “There are not only the lambs to see, there will be plenty of woolly crafts and activities throughout the Easter holidays to celebrate Saltholme’s newest family members.”

Lambing Live is free to the public and as well as watching the new-borns arrive, there will be lots of craft events as well.

The event will run from Saturday, April 5, to Monday, April 21 and everyone is welcome to get close to the lambs in the lambing shed.

And for those interested in seeing more of Saltholme, guided walks are also available.
