IT was second-time unlucky when a Hartlepool teenager appeared on a TV singing competition – but he has vowed not to give up on his dream.
Nick Dixon, 17, was watched by millions of viewers when he sang on The Voice UK on BBC One on Saturday night.
But despite not making it through to the next round, when none of the celebrity judges swivelled round in their chairs, Nick received some great feedback.
They told him not to give up, and he has already launched his own You Tube channel to showcase his singing and songwriting skills, on the advice of judge Will.I.Am.
And fellow judge Kylie Minogue said she “fell a little bit in love” with determined Nick after he handed the judges his business card.
It was the second year Nick, of Courageous Close, Seaton Carew, was left disappointed in the show’s blind auditions. But he is not too downhearted. He told the Mail: “It was a really great experience but I was still extremely nervous.
“When the judges didn’t turn round again I was disappointed but I thought the feedback I got was fantastic.
“Will.I.Am gave me some really good advice. He said I should start up a You Tube channel and get some songs out.
“Hopefully I will get some gigs on the back of the show. Everything’s looking up and I am really glad I went on.”
Nick gave a powerful performance of Elton John’s Home Again.
He was cheered on backstage by his family, parents Dave and Jeanette and little sister Sasha, 15.
Judge Sir Tom Jones said maybe his choice of song was the reason he was not successful, and told Nick: “Keep doing it though, don’t give up.”
Fellow judge Ricky Wilson, lead singer of The Kaiser Chiefs, said: “You will keep going and it will happen one day.”
Will.I.Am praised Nick’s courage in having another shot on the show and said: “It takes a lot to come back a second time. He walked off the stage still smiling.”
Nick, who is studying for his A-levels in music and music technology at Hartlepool Sixth Form College is a tutor with town-based charity Red Dreams.
And he is also building up a fanbase by performing solo gigs in pubs in the Leeds and York area.
