A DISPLAY of vintage cars will be on the way after all in Hartlepool after fears it might not take place.
Ken Rigg, 67, and his friends have come to the rescue after plans for a classic car show run by the Northern Bygones Society looked set to have hit a stumbling block this year.
The hurdle came after a council-run facility, where they have held regular events for the last eight years, was booked by another attraction.
The Northern Bygones Society normally holds one of its classic car shows – which attract hundreds of people from around the country – in the car park of the Hartlepool Maritime Experience.
The venue is owned by Hartlepool Borough Council, and the event is normally held on a Sunday in April.
But when organisers contacted the council to ask for Sunday, April 27, as the day for this year’s Spring event, they were informed that all Sundays in the month had been booked up and paid for by a company which runs car boot sales.
Now, though, a solution has been found, and it means the event can be held on the same day as previous rallies.
Ken explained: “We are going to run it on behalf of the Northern Vintage Transport Association. We are going to hold a classic car rally at Jacksons Landing car park. We were given permission by the council to do it on Sunday, April 27.”
Ken said he and his friend Alf Sterling would do it on behalf of the NVTA and added: “We would like to thank Coun Keith Fisher for all his help in getting this off the ground.”
Ken is a keen vintage car enthusiast himself. He has a 1969 Triumph Spitfire Mark 3 1300 which he has transformed since he first bought it around 14 years ago.
“All my life, I have had cars and old cars,” said Ken, a married father of two and grandfather of one.
He bought the Spitfire and restored it from its rusting condition back to its pristine best, he said.
Now, Ken is hoping other fellow vintage vehicle enthusiasts will join him for the event later this month.
“We are hoping for a good turnout. We are going to print some leaflets to raise awareness and see if we can get some friends to rally round.”
The rally at Jacksons Landing will run from 10am to 4pm, and is free to attend.
Ken urged anyone who would like to bring a vintage car to contact him on (01429) 870988.
