A RESTAURANT has had a relaunch to herald the fantastic mural which now adorns its walls.

Sheesh Mahal, at Seaton Reach in Coronation Drive, Hartlepool, is filled with wonderful images thanks to the work of artist Suzie Devey.

Suzie, a student at Cleveland College of Art & Design, was asked to do the mural after some of her previous work was spotted in a dog day care centre in Stockton.

Suzie said: “The restaurant was looking for someone to paint the Taj Mahal and asked if I was interested. I took up the offer.”

But Suzie took the idea a step further and used the inspiration of a stamp collection she’d had since she was a child.

As well as an image of the Taj Mahal, it also included other scenes such as a temple in Calcutta, a tiger, Bollywood dancing, a tea picker and a map of India.

The customers are really happy with it and it has made the restaurant look really homely.

But instead of creating them as stamp sized, Suzie came up with a series of paintings which were each about 6ft by 4ft.

She said she put in more than 140 hours of work but the result was artwork which won huge praise from the Sheesh Mahal customers.

“It created quite a buzz,” said Suzie. “People were asking me about it and some were asking for my business card.”

She said she loved working with the restaurant owners and their family and added: “They were amazing. They were lovely people to work for.”

Suxie now has commissions to do the music room at a school and to do artwork for Oxfam.

In the meantime, bosses at Sheesh Mahal were so impressed by her work, they held a relaunch of the restaurant this week for customers to see the excellent murals.

Samia Begum, the daughter of the owner Shahrouf Miah, said: “We were over the moon with Suzie’s work. We are so thankful to her for giving her time to us.

“The customers are really happy with it and it has made the restaurant look really homely.”

The restaurant first opened it’s doors in August 2011 and offers authentic Indian cuisine. The relaunch event saw more than 200 customers enjoy an evening of great food and live music.
