HARTLEPOOL cheerleaders are jumping for joy after their most successful year ever when they won over 100 trophies.

Hartlepool Hawks Cheerleading Academy say their success is thanks to moving into their own £10,000 purpose-built building.

The Hawks used to have to practice their moves from three different venues across Hartlepool.

But they are now all under one roof in Moreland Street and have spent £10,000 on renovating two units into a new academy.

Head coach Beccii Taylor said: “It has been our best competition season yet. It helps having our own facilities.

“We didn’t expect to have it in the four years we have been going but we came across it and had enough funds from subs and donations.

“It makes a massive difference to us. I think it is reflected by the results this year.”

Hawks of all ages competed in categories including pom-pom dance, street dance and jazz dance, at national competitions held in Blackpool, Newcastle and Manchester.

Among the many trophies and titles the Hawks’ 60 members have notched up include their mini and youth jazz team retaining their title at the British Championships.

Beccii added: “Last year we were competing at level one and this year we have been competing at level 3 and 4, which is great when you consider level 6 is world championship standard.

“We have been able to push our cheerleaders to that standard and having our own building means we can offer more classes.”

After a busy six months competing between December and June, the Hawks will be a familiar sight at many local events over the summer.

Beccii added: “We have got loads of performances this summer including two events on some days.

“We have got about 15 bookings so far.”

The academy has also successfully steered a number of members through UK Cheerleading Association coaching qualifications who all now help with the running of the academy.

They are Millie Stokle, Alice Stafford, Katie Wise, Emily Jones, Amy Stuart, Chloe Coates, Rob Mudd, Sarah Francis, Janet Smith, Lauren May, Katie Kennedy, Taylor Allen and Caitlyn Groves.

The academy is open 4pm-9pm weekdays and 10am-5pm on weekends.
