Dozens of cheerleaders have embarked on a massive fundraising campaign to help them bid to become champions of Europe.

Forty-five members of the Hartlepool Hawks Academy have qualified for The European Summit, which will be held at the Worcester Arena, in Worcester from July 25-26.

It will pitch the Hawks against the very best that Europe has to offer.

But the cost of getting all of the Hawks team to Worcester is £4,000 and Hawks members have drawn up a fundraising drive to get the finances.

They have already held a 12-hour cheerathon in town which raised £800. Around 70 children aged 4-20 took part in 12 hours of cheerleading, including tumbling, jazz, hip hop, pom, commercial, boxercise and musical theatre.

But Hawks founder Rebecca Taylor said the battle for more cash goes on and she appealed for people to support the talented team.

We have got a race night and a fun day coming up and we will be doing performances. There is a lot of money to raise but we are already organising events.

The agenda includes the race night at the Rovers Quoits Club in Hartlepool.

It will be held on Friday, June 5. Tickets are £3 for the event which lasts from 7pm until late. They are available either on the door or from Rebecca on 07968 175673.

Next will be the fun day to be held at the Travellers Rest, also in Hartlepool, on July 5.

It will last from noon to 5pm and the highlights will include performances by Hawks members, as well as a bouncy castle, fairground rides and a barbecue.

The Hawks qualified for the European summit after competing in the British National Championships which were held in Telford earlier this year.

Eight squads from the Hawks went to the nationals and the teams to qualify for Worcester were the mini hip hop, mini jazz, youth cheerleading, youth hip hop, youth jazz, junior cheerleading and senior jazz.
