Whether its Zumba, Latin or salsa – dance is helping to shape up the people of Hartlepool.
Putting your best foot forward is being encouraged by Hartlepool Council’s Feel Good In Hartlepool Team.
Leading the initiative is multi-sports and dance activator Ryan Houghton, who is running four different sessions for people to show off their moves.
He said: “It is about getting people active and into a more active lifestyle.
“We want to increase participation in dance.”
Three of the sessions come under the heading of Move To Music.
l Dance Fit – on Mondays at Mill House Leisure Centre, from 5pm to 5.45pm, and the cost is £1.50.
l FitSteps – on Wednesdays at Brierton Sports Centre, from 1pm-2pm, costing £2.
l Zumba Gold – on Thursdays at Brierton Sports Centre, from 1pm to 2pm, and the cost is £2.
Dance Fit is a mix of dance and aerobic moves and is suitable for people of all abilities.
FitSteps blends ballroom and Latin into easy-to-learn dance moves and Zumba Gold is a low-impact version of traditional Zumba moves.
Another popular initiative is called Dance Social. It runs from 1pm to 3pm at the Borough Hall and costs £3 with refreshments provided.
It is held on Wednesdays from 1pm to 3pm and Ryan hailed it as “going from strength to strength. The most we have had at a session is 80 people”.
“There is a social aspect to it. People can come along and have a cuppa. It is not a class where you are expected to get up on the dance floor.”
But Ryan is hoping to succeed with his aim of “getting more people down there and making more people aware.”
