IT’S 10 years since Fall Out Boy made it big with Sugar We’re Going Down and Dance Dance, and amid the tabloid furore it’s difficult not to admire the Chicago band’s endurance.

Their sixth LP in all, American Beauty/American Psycho contains traces of the expert anthemism which hauled them into the mainstream, notably on its title track and The Kids Aren’t Alright.

Mostly, though, it’s a case of diminishing returns, with most songs buried beneath bombast and flamboyance with nary a hint of substance on which to rest.

It’s a trick they’ve pulled off before, but while it’s sure to preserve their arena-status, the majority here is little more than hot air to waft among the rafters. 4/10. AW
