ALBUM REVIEW: The Tallest Man On Earth - Dark Bird Is Home

THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH ... Dark Bird Is Home (Dead Oceans)
THE TALLEST MAN ON EARTH ... Dark Bird Is Home (Dead Oceans)

ON his three previous LPs, Swedish troubadour Kristian Matsson has established himself among contemporary folk’s most beguiling figures, channeling the spirit of Dylan via timeless and endearing songwriting.

Now, though, that approach has been tweaked somewhat, with Dark Bird Is Home being the first time he’s employed both a full band and electric instruments.

Nothing is put to waste either, with lush, widescreen arrangements sprucing up the likes of Timothy and Sagres - the latter of which resembles the cinematic Americana of The War On Drugs.

However, one of the key aspects to Matsson’s appeal has always been familiarity, so it’s little surprise the most captivating moments occur when he reverts to type.

As such, the gorgeous piano-led Little Nowhere Town and the clean acoustics of Beginners act as comforting blankets on a record which can otherwise take a little getting used to. 7/10. AW
