GREAT START ... Joe McElderry kicked off his Evolution Tour with a hometown show at the Customs House, in South Shields.

JOE McElderry kicked off his new tour on a high with the first of three hometown shows.

Despite admitting he had first-night nerves, the X Factor and Popstar to Operastar champ gave a flawless performance to a sell-out crowd at the Customs House, in South Shields, tonight.

He started the show by taking fans back to where it all began in 2009 with his X Factor audition song, Dance With My Father.

The stunning performance set the tone for the evening, which perfectly tracked the progression of his career over the last few years.

A different version of his winning single, The Climb, was fantastic and really showed how Joe has grown as a performer.

Joe, of Westoe, South Shields, moved swiftly on to the next stage of his career with debut album title track, Wide Awake.

Italian song Canta Della Terra, from the album Classic, provided a stunning performance which silenced the audience, before earning Joe his first of three standing ovations in the first act.

Gorgeous renditions of Nessun Dorma and Time To Say Goodbye delivered the other two.

Another stand-out moment in the show came from a beautiful performance of How We Love which got emotions in the audience running high.

Joe quickly got the crowd revved up in the second act with Love Is War, a cover of The Killers’ Human and his own track Fahrenheit.

Backed up by his fantastic band, the star proved he can sing anything by taking requests from the audience for his regular feature, Jukebox Joe, before treating the excited crowd to a dance and pop medley including the likes of Easy Lover and Uptown Funk.

Next, Joe gave a debut performance of new self-penned track, Hollywood. The upbeat number could prove a hit for the singer as it went down a storm with the crowd.

Joe closed the show with his second single, Ambitions, leaving his audience eager for more.

The new show looked great – the staging and lighting created a lovely visual and Joe’s performance was as stunning as ever.

The star really has come a long way since we first saw him step in front of the judges on the X Factor, and that’s evident from this show.

The singer looked dashing and interacted with his adoring audience with ease. He oozes charm and confidence.

Joe is a master showman and can have the entire crowd up on their feet dancing one minute, and stunned into silence, wiping tears from their eyes during an emotional track the next.

The Evolution Tour is a more mature show for Joe, but as he grows, his fans are sure to stick loyally by his side in devoted allegiance.

Joe is set to play around 100 gigs on his tour, and fans across the UK who head out to see it are in for an unforgettable night.
