An American indie-rock band with a big cult following will play in Newcastle next month as one of just a handful of UK dates.

Modest Mouse, who recently released their first album in eight years, will be at the O2 Academy on Thursday, July 9.

The date will be eagerly awaited by fans, as they cancelled their previous Tyneside show, at The Sage two years ago, to concentrate on writing the album which became Strangers To Ourselves.

As well as Newcastle, they are playing slots at the Calling Festival in London, T in the Park in Perth, and headline gigs in Birmingham, Manchester and Leeds.

The band were formed in Issaquah, Washington, in 1993, and have steadily built up a devoted following.

The line-up has been fluid, with personnel regularly changing - Johnny Marr, former guitarist with The Smiths, famously joined for 2007 album We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank, which reached No 1 in the US Billboard chart.

Singer-guitarist Isaac Brock aand drummer Jeremiah Green have been constants, however, and spearhead the current six-piece line-up.

Strangers To Ourselves gave the band their first UK Top 30 placing, reaching No 28 on its release in March.

Tickets for the O2 Academy gig are £17.50, plus the usual fees, from (0844) 477 2000.

Support comes from Minnesota pop band Hippo Campus and New York singer Elle King.
