THE Modfather himself is giving his backing to a Hartlepool cancer fundraiser.
Paul Weller has signed a canvas featuring his band The Jam which will be raffled off during the March of the Mods event taking place in March next year.
The three-and-a-half foot black and white painted picture, which features Weller and fellow band members Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler, belongs to Kev McGuire, assistant co-ordinator of the event.
It is also signed by drummer Buckler and Foxton will be signing the piece later.
And former Madness frontman Suggs annd Gino Washington of the Ramjam Band are also in on the act, donating signed pictures for the raffle.
Former Hartlepool man Kev, who is in a band called The Style Selektors with the town’s Kieran Dobson, Peter Aves and Jack Johnson and Billingham’s Chris Groom and Sedgefield’s Tim Jasper, has met Weller a number of times over the years through the music scene.
He even played at the Hammersmith Apollo in London last year with Weller in aid of homeless charity Crisis.
Kev, 48, who was given the canvas as a gift by a friend who served with in the Royal Marines, said: “They are getting this as a raffle prize reluctantly.”
Kev lived in the Owton Manor area before moving to Stockton three years ago and is a resusitation manager with South Tyneside NHS Foundation Trust.
He said The Style Selektors were playing a recent gig in Woking, where The Jam hail from, when Weller’s friend Vic Falsetta invited the band round to Weller’s house.
It was there where Weller added his signature to the picture.
Buckler went round to the band’s hotel, where he also signed the piece.
The Style Selektors will be supporting Foxton’s From The Jam group during a gig at The Billingham Forum on October 11 and at Newcastle’s O2 Academy on November 8.
The second annual March of the Mods in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust, co-ordinated by Micky Hudson, takes place at The Staincliffe Hotel on March 27, next year.
A host of bands will be performing from 3pm onwards.
