To mark the release of their new EP, Hyde & Beast take to the stage in the region this weekend.

They’ll be performing tracks from Hard Times Good Times at The Cluny in Newcastle’s Ouseburn area on Friday night.

The Sunderland act - made up of Neil Bassett from Golden Virgins and Dave Hyde from The Futureheads - released their second studio album last August to critical acclaim.

The album was Album of the Day on 6Music, and the title track was Single of the Week on Shaun Keaveny’s breakfast show. It was also b-listed at Amazing Radio. Other support came from XFM’s John Kennedy and 6Music’s Marc Riley, Lauren Laverne, Steve Lamacq and Tom Ravenscroft.

This week they returned with Hard Times Good Times, an EP full of their typically infectious melodies that hark back to late ‘60s / early ‘70s classic pop, that has been compared to The Beatles and T-Rex.

It will be officially launched at Friday’s gig.

Speaking of their influences, Neil said: “Neither Dave nor I really listen to anything made much after 1976 so our musical influences are before that. When people talk about us they mention classic 70s bands like The Beatles and performers like Harry Nilsson, which is terrific.”

He added: “We are dead happy about the new EP. We recorded and mixed it ourselves and we are pretty chuffed with her (it is a her. That much has been confirmed). Hope you enjoy it. There’s flamingoes on the cover.”

The band has a full summer line-up of festival dates, including Lindisfarne Festival and We Are Family in Hartlepool, which both take place next month.

In recent weeks, they’ve performed at Sunniside Live, Summer Streets in Southwick and Kendal Calling in Cumbria.
