An investigation has been launched following the sudden death of a man at a property in Church Street, Hartlepool.

A police cordon remained in place in Church Street this morning (November 23) following the death of a man in his forties.

Detectives have now confirmed they are treating the death as ‘unexplained’,

Cleveland Police were called to a report of the sudden death of a man at a property at around 10.15pm on Sunday, November 22.

A spokesman for the force said: “A man aged in his forties was pronounced dead at the scene. The death is being treated as unexplained at this time.

"Inquiries are ongoing.”

Witnesses say a number of police cars and ambulances were spotted on the street near the junction with Lynn Street.

Photographs at the scene taken this morning show a police cordon in place around a number of properties and two police cars parked outside.

David Crute, owner of Fast Snacks said: “Apparently there was a fracas between some residents last night. It’s like a half way house.”

Another business owner, who did not wish to be named, said: “I drove past last night at about 9.30pm and there was no police or ribbon then. I came to work at 8.30am and it was up.”
