Juniors -

Charlotte Preece and Kieran Hall, playing in The Durham County Junior Golfing Society Inter Counties Mixed Foursomes held at Ryton GC, had a spectacular result, of which all Castle Eden members are justifiably proud.

Charlotte and Kieran shot a gross 90 nett 64, to win by five shots to join other former Castle Eden junior pairs, Border & Johnson and Harbord & Goodlad, as past champions of Durham & Northumberland.

We wish them both continued success.

Playing with 13-times club champion Graham Border, club secretary Mick Clucas knocked in four birdies, while Graham plotted a steady par round over the Castle Eden

course.

Playing up and down from everywhere, with no dropped shots, Graham gave Mick the opportunity to go for broke during the round while he kept the card ticking over.

Mick’s four net birdies came at holes four, seven, 10 and 18.

The 18th provided him with a grandstand finish, as after a perfect drive up the middle of the fairway, Mick pitched to six feet and holed the putt for their one point margin of victory.

Club Cup round 1 -

Long driver Alex Robertson almost had victory snatched from him after a great round was almost upended on the final hole.

Standing on level gross par after the 17th hole, the innocuous par four closing hole cost Alex six strokes.

His two-stroke allowance was enough to bring him back to level and the back nine had produced enough solid holes to take the game on count back from Luke Bassam, Norman Holcroft and Billy Wilkinson, all of whom shared a net 70 for the day.

Leading scores - 1 Alexander Robertson 72-2-70, 2 Luke Bassam 73-3-70, 3 Norman Holcroft 77-7-70, 4 William Wilkinson 73-3-70, 5 Kenneth Lahney 90-19-71, 6 Nigel Bradwell 79-6-73, 7 David Owens 88-15-73, 8 Stuart Bennett 90-16-74, 9 Stephen Taylor 81-7-74, 10 David Webster 82-7-75.

Handicap Trophy/EGU Medal -

The Handicap Trophy sees the winner of each of the four club handicap divisions, drawn together to compete in a final for the trophy and the EGU Medal.

Division 1 saw Steve Wilson take the qualifying place by virtue of a great 66 from his five stroke allowance.

With a very neat front nine holes and a fine gross par of 35 on the return, including a birdie two on the 11th, he kept away from the very competitive field by a whisker.

Stephen Taylor’s net 65 in division two was attained from his great run of play from the first tee through to the 14th, where he was still two under gross par for the round.

A couple of errors between the 15th to the 17th pegged him back a touch, but not enough to take away his well earned place in the final.

Ian Musgrave also came home with a net 65 in division 3, after a couple of early errors on holes three and four were rectified with solid play to the end of the round.

Mixed Singles Stableford -

Anthony Watson can thank an outstanding start and a great run of play mid-round for his narrow victory in the recent Mixed Stableford.

An opening birdie, a net eagle on the fifth hole and another three pointer on the eighth gave him 21 points at the turn.
