The store on Dunston Road closed on January 31 for refurbishment as part of a £500m investment by the retailer into improving sites across the UK.

Aldi says the 940sqm supermarket is being given a more customer-friendly layout with more space and clearer signs to help shoppers find products more easily whilst browsing new ranges.

Store manager Gary Iveson said: “The store is looking fantastic, and we can’t wait to welcome our loyal customers back so they can see it for themselves.

"We’re committed to making sure that the shopping experience each customer enjoys in our stores is on a par with the products and services they’re used to.

“Customers will notice a few small changes throughout the store to align with social distancing guidelines, ensuring we keep our community safe, and we thank you for the co-operation in ensuring the safety of both our colleagues and customers.”

Aldi says the new-look store will offer increased space with new freezers and areas dedicated to fresh British meat and fish, Lacura health and beauty products, beers, wines and spirits, Mamia babycare products, and improved Food to Go section.

Various Covid-19 safety measures will continue to be in place including sanitisation stations on entry, Perspex screens at tills and social distancing reminders in store.

A traffic light system to control the number of people going in and out of the store will also be in place.

Specialbuys will be available every Thursday and Sunday in the Aisle of Aldi. And during the first week of reopening, the store will have a number of craft and hobby materials and kits on special offer.

The store’s 108-space car park has been closed while the work is carried out.

Two new jobs are being created as part of the refurbishment bringing the workforce up to 30 staff.

During the refurbishment, customers have been redirected to nearby stores in Brenda Road, Hartlepool, as well as at Billingham and Peterlee.
