East Durham school’s biggest ever festive collection for food bank

An East Durham secondary school pulled out all the stops for its annual food bank collection.

Wellfield School in Wingate recorded its most successful collection yet despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

Staff, students and parents all donated a huge amount of non-perishable food for the local Trussell Trust food bank based in Peterlee.

They also contributed a large amount of much-needed toiletries and sanitary products.

Geography teacher and most able and talented student coordinator Ant Pearson said: “We had a massive push on toiletries and sanitary products as well as all the normal food this year.

"The result was absolutely phenomenal. It is the biggest collection we’ve ever had.

"Our motto is going the extra mile and I think this is above and beyond that.

"A big thank you to staff and particularly the parents and children who really rallied to the cause.”

The collection took place over a number of weeks.
