Hartlepool charity could stage a Christmas prom for pupils who miss out this summer due to school closures

A Hartlepool charity is considering stepping in to save the day for school leavers who miss out on their prom.

Dozens of people have hailed the idea, being proposed by Miles For Men, as ‘fantastic’.

The coronavirus threat means hundreds of Hartlepool students do not know when they will be returning to the classroom – or whether those who are finishing their school time will be able to have a prom.

Some social media reports suggest that proms may be held later in the year.

But Micky Day, the Miles For Men founder, is also hoping to help save the day for those whose proms are not rearranged.

He said: “We were just thinking that we don't want people to lose out on the money they have spent on dresses and suits, also vehicles too.”

He said families will have arranged for everything from clothes to hair and make-up, and added: “It is a lot of money and the kids deserve their prom.

“They look forward to it and hopefully we can still make that happen.”

The proposal is still in its very early stages but Micky believes a venue such as the Borough Hall could be big enough to cater for a special occasion.

“It is an idea we have put out in Facebook and we have already had at least 70 comments from people saying it is fantastic,” said Micky.

We are now entering the second week of school closures following the coronavirus outbreak which last week saw Hartlepool have the lowest number of cases in the North East.

Micky Day set up Miles for Men in memory of his father Michael senior, who died of throat cancer in 2007, to raise money for Cancer Research.

He had initially hoped to collect £5,000 but the inaugural sponsored run in August 2012 raised a staggering £40,000 and the charity’s future was assured.

Since then the group has expanded to stage a range of other events and support a number of good causes across Hartlepool.
