Nine pictures from a deserted Hartlepool town centre on anniversary of first lockdown

The centre of Hartlepool remained eerily silent as the town marked one year since the beginning of the first coronavirus lockdown.

Areas such as Church Street and York Road would usually be bustling with shoppers and workers in normal circumstances. Yet, as these images suggest, the town was largely quiet on March 23. Landmarks across Hartlepool will be lit up at night-time between Tuesday and Thursday to allow people to reflect on a traumatic 12 months.
