The hopes of a new statue have been suggested by Micky Day, the founder of the town charity Miles For Men.

Micky wants to pay tribute to the hundreds of heroes who helped Hartlepool to get through 2010.

"It would be something for everyone,” said Micky. “We are thinking about an angel at Seaton where people could have their loved ones names etched in to the angel.

"It would have seating around it so that people could look out on to the bay.”

The idea is still in the early stages and Micky added: “We are just putting the proposal together.”

He hopes to put together a proposal which can be taken to council officials.

But Miles For Men has talked to local companies which would be interested in helping to build the statue and Micky added: “The job would hopefully be kept in town.

"It would be nice to reminisce about how everyone came together in Hartlepool during the pandemic.

"We think it would be 10ft high by 4ft wide and we want it to be prominent so that people would come to Hartlepool and have their photo taken with it.”

The idea is one of the Miles For Men projects that Micky revealed for 2021.

Others include plans for the return of the annual 5k run which had to be put on hold this year because of Covid-19.

Miles For Men is also looking at the possibility of a raft race and a soap box derby to give the people of Hartlepool plenty to entertain them after life returns to normal.

The charity is also teaming up with Amber’s Law and another charity called the Solan Connor Fawcett Family Cancer Trust. They are planning to hold a fundraising event where representatives of each take part in cycling, climbing, running, swimming and walking.

Micky’s hopes for 2021 also including making a donation to Rob Burrow, the rugby league legend who has motor neurone disease.
