TALENTED cheerleaders kicked off the new season in fine style at a national event.

Thousands of people watched as the Hartlepool Hawks continued to establish themselves on the big stage at Blackpool’s huge Winter Gardens.

The team only formed just over a year ago, but have already secured a number of podium places at national events.

And the future looks bright for the talented team after youngsters performed brilliantly at the season opener, the British Championships.

Club coaches were delighted after the young Hawks came back home with five top four finishes.

Jessica Dodd, six, and Josh Egan, seven, just missed out on top spot by finishing second in the mini duo category.

The pair also secured a third place finish when they were joined by eight-year-old Millie Ford in the mini trio section.

Millie was also successful in the youth trio category finishing second alongside Megan Costello and Sophie Edmenson, both eight.

Sophie capped off a busy day by joining Danielle Egan, eight, and finishing second in the youth duo category.

Ami Ford, and Jess Jordan, both 16, along with Elisha Dring, 11, finished fourth in the senior trio section.

Rebecca Taylor, head coach of the Hawks, said: “Everyone performed extremely well.

“The competition was extremely high this year so to do as well as we did is a real achievement.

“Everyone was on a high, I am absolutely delighted.”

The Hawks will be hoping they carry on their good form throughout the cheerleading season.

They will be making the journey back to Blackpool in January for the International Championships.

As well as practising hard, it’s been a busy period for the Hawks away from the gym.

They have organised a number of events to raise money for the club - the latest of which will take place tomorrow.

Fun and games for all the family will be on offer at the Belle Vue Community Sports and Youth Centre, in Hartlepool’s Kendal Road, from 11am-3pm.

A range of stalls will be set up, games and activities will take place and youngsters can also visit Santa’s grotto.

The Hawks will perform on the day as will students from Hartlepool dance school On Your Toes.

The fun day is free of charge.
