A SCHOOL reunion next month will give classmates a chance to bid farewell to a former pupil who is emigrating.

A get-together is taking place for Dyke House Comprehensive School’s Class of 1987.

Guest of honour will be ex-pupil Darren Elsdon, a former Northern area boxing champion who boxed under Gus Robinson in the early 90s. Darren is emigrating to Australia in December and it will be a chance for him to say his goodbyes.

Helen O’Rourke (nee Burdis), 42, who is organising the event with Damon Bage, said: “We have got quite a few sportsmen from the school who have gone on to do things but Darren was well-known for boxing.

“He works offshore and tried to be home for a reunion we had in February, but didn’t get back in time.”

Proceeds from the reunion will be donated to the ward at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, in Sheffield, which is treating former pupil Steven Reed, who has been diagnosed with leukaemia.

The reunion will include an 80s disco and dance-off with trophies, a photo booth, catering from former pupil Andrea Newton (nee Welsh) and a raffle.

Classmates are being asked to take along photographs to go on memory boards, and supervisor support worker Helen says there will also be a couple of surprises. Teachers are welcome to attend.

The reunion takes place from 7pm on Friday, November 22 at The Raglan Quoit & Social Club, in Stuart Street and admission is £10. To find out more, see the School reunion for Dyke House leavers 1987 Facebook page.
