HISTORY buffs are planning to get to work on a new book thanks to a £10,000 grant.

The knowledgeable members of Hartlepool Headland Local History Group have put together books in the past - full of then and now pictures looking at how the town has been transformed over the decades.

Reflections of Old Hartlepool and Further Reflections of Old Hartlepool flew off the shelves as residents were keen to look back on the history of Hartlepool.

And now the members are gathering material for their next book after the group was awarded a £10,000 grant boost from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

History group chairman David Geen said: “It’s great news for the group to receive the grant which will allow us to start work on our next book.

“We have access to so much history in the town and there are so many old photographs taken over the years.

“It’s truly fascinating to take a photograph and compare it with the same spot in the town now.”

David, 68, said: “Our previous books have proved extremely popular.

“People are extremely interested in how the town has changed and looking back at what their home or business looked like however many years ago.”

The Heritage Lottery Fund provides funding to help groups, communities and organisations who are exploring time gone by and reflecting on the events of the First World War.

As well as helping to design the new book, which will be available in the summer, David and the group are busy planning a number of events and activities as part of a project to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War and the 100th anniversary of the Bombardment of Hartlepool.

David added: “As you can imagine we are extremely busy this year, we have a lot going on with the anniversary coming up.”

The history group is always happy to welcome new members along at its regular meetings.

The group’s next meeting will be held at the Borough Hall, on the Headland, on Tuesday, January 21 starting at 6.45pm.

The next drop-in session will also take place at the Borough Hall on Wednesday, February 12 from 11.30am-4pm.
