SLIDESHOW: Rolling back the years for English Martyrs School’s birthday treat

BIRTHDAYS are normally a good excuse to dust down pictures of how someone used to look in younger days.

In the case of English Martyrs School and Sixth Form College, in Catcote Road, Hartlepool, we hope our collection of photos will bring back happpy memories for not one but dozens of former pupils.

Our excuse for raiding the Mail’s archives is the school’s ongoing celebrations to mark its 40th birthday.

English Martyrs was founded in 1973 following the amalgamation of St Anne’s, St Bede’s, St Francis’s, St Joseph’s and St Peter’s secondary schools.

Events to mark this year’s anniversary have included a school mass attended by former staff and a dinner attended by hundreds of people at the Headland’s Borough Hall.

If you have enjoyed this trip back in time then why not log on to our website to watch a slideshow of these and other pictures from the school’s past?

You may even have your own photos of your time at English Martyrs that you want to share with former classmates.

You can email them to or post them to Newsdesk, Hartlepool Mail, New Clarence House, Wesley Square, Hartlepool, TS24 8BX.
