DRIVERS are still facing flooding problems on the roads in and around Hartlepool today.
Merlin Way, on the Bishop Cuthbert estate, is now closed, along with Dalton Back Lane on the outskirts of the town.
Usworth Road, in Hartlepool, Valley Drive, in the West Park area of town, and the A689 eastbound at Newton Bewley, are all flooded but passable with care, say police.
The A179 from Hart Village to West View, which was under water and causing problems for commuters, is now said to be clear.
Brenda Road, near to Greythorpe Forge, was flooded and closed but has now reopened to traffic.
The A689 near Wynyard is closed eastbound between the two roundabouts and traffic is being diverted through Wynyard Village itself.
But a spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said: “There is a lot of standing water in the village so the situation is being closely monitored.”
The A139 Norton northbound and A179 sliproads on and off the A19 have a lot of standing water – as much as 18 inches – along with Billingham Bottoms and Low Grange Avenue but remain open.
The A19 northbound was down to one lane, causing long tailbacks for commuters, although further north the A19 between the A1018 and the A690 has partly reopened after it was closed northbound.
But commuters who usually travel on Haverton Hill Road and New Road, Billingham, will have to find an alternative route after two or three feet of water has seen the road closed.
The spokeswoman added: “The heavy rainfall has caused a lot of disruption but it’s a changing picture so keep logging onto the Hartlepool Mail website for further updates.”
The Met Office forecasts that the rain will continue throughout today and tonight before easing around 6am Wednesday.
