A great weigh to help raise cancer charity funds

PEOPLE are invited to shed some pounds in aid of a cancer charity.

Footprints Nursery, in Tees Street, Hartlepool, is hosting a sponsored slim in aid of the Kay Smith Fund.

Kay was just 37 when she died from breast cancer in January 2006.

The former administrator for Travis Perkins builders' merchant had set up a fund in her name to help pay for research into the disease.

On Wednesday, exactly four years to the date when Kay passed away, the start of a 10-week sponsored slim in aid of the charity took place at the nursery.

Footprints teamed up with JWW Building Services last year for a similar event and raised 2,500 for the cause after 20 JWW workers lost a combined total of 16st 5oz.

This week, 16 wannabe slimmers went along to the nursery in the hope of dropping a few pounds.

Suzie Yeniceri, business manager at the nursery, is running the sessions and offering one-to-one nutritional advice as she holds a diploma in weight management and consulting.

Suzie is also taking part in the slim-a-thon, and at 16st 10lb is hoping to shed a stone by the end of the 10 weeks – though she admitted this could be hard with a planned two-week trip to Cuba coming up.

She said: "Most people at the session said they are aiming to lose about a stone within the 10 weeks.

"It's the new year and after over-indulging at Christmas, people want a new start for the new year and to get healthy."

Suzie said the group hopes to raise as much money as possible and to hopefully beat last year's total.

She added men as well as women had gone along to the first session and the ages ranged from early 20s up to 60s.

Suzie said: "It's all about maintaining a healthy eating lifestyle rather than cutting calories.

"I give people general ideas and guidelines on what to do, dipping into what people already know.

"It's got to be a change that people can maintain, not about depriving yourself and cutting things, and it's all for charity as well."

People can be sponsored to lose weight or they can pay a small fee.

Anyone who puts on weight will be fined 1 for every pound they put on.

The slimming group meets at the nursery on Wednesdays between 6pm-7pm.
