Rush hour motorists were brought to a standstill following a lorry crash on Newcastle's Central Motorway East causing it to close in both directions.
Northumbria Police has now confirmed the road has been reopened in both direction.
The HGV crashed just after 2am today and spilled diesel across all four carriageways.
Emergency crews were on site throughout the night trying to clear the road and making repairs to the central reservation.
The incident happened when the HGV, for reasons yet to be established, went over the central reservation and onto it's side. The driver was taken to hospital as a precaution, but was not believed to be seriously injured.
