A19 update: Man given roadside surgery after heart problems as serious collision causes hours of problems for motorists

A man was given roadside surgery and is in a critical condition after a crash on the A19 which caused hours of traffic problems.

The collision happened just before 1pm today, north of the Dalton Park turn off near Murton.

The Great North Air Ambulance was called in to help the emergency services on scene.

Its crew gave a man, believed to have been in the car, airway assistance, roadside surgery and a blood transfusion and say the man had suffered a cardiac arrest.

He was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, with the southbound carriageway closed off to traffic to allow the helicopter access to the area.

The vehicles were cleared once police had completed investigations at the scene.

The northbound carriageway was reopened just after 5.15pm.
