Durham Constabulary's road policing unit has closed off the northbound carriageway between junctions 60 at Bradbury, where traffic can join the A689, and junction 61 at Bowburn, south of Durham, which links up with the A688.

A crash happened between the turn offs at around 1am today.

The southbound carriageway was initially also closed off to traffic, but reopened an hour later.

The force has said the northbound route is still closed and has thanked drivers for their patience.

Elsewhere in the region, snow has caused difficulties on the roads.

Durham's officers have said that the A66 westbound and eastbound at Barnard Castle is now moving on both carriageways, however there is still a lot of snow and ice at the location.

Gritters have been out to cover the route, but police have said people should travel through the area if necessary and advised them to take caution.
