The girls, then aged 13 and 14, had left frail Ms Wrightson’s Hartlepool home, in Stephen Street, late on Monday, December 8.

They then went to see a teenage boy who they knew and listened to music on a mobile phone.

The pair returned to Ms Wrightson’s home at about 2am, at which point the older girl said the victim was awake, bleeding heavily from the top of her head and mumbling.

The older defendant told the hearing during questioning from her barrister, Jamie Hill QC that she did not assault Ms Wrightson at all during the second visit and fell asleep twice.

“When me and (younger girl) were sat on the couch I was looking at Angie’s head and she was talking but I couldn’t understand a word she was saying.

“It was horrible.”

“I said we need to ring an ambulance but that’s when (younger girl) rang the police and we went home.

“Obviously I couldn’t get the phone off (younger girl).

“If it was someone like one of my mates I would have got the phone off, her but (younger girl) is different.”

Earlier on in the trial the jury heard that following the phone call to police, both girls were picked up by officers at 4am from a location near to Ms Wrightson’s home and taken to their respective homes.

Both defendants were arrested by officers after Ms Wrightson’s body was found the following day and subsequently charged with her murder.
