A GEM of a couple have celebrated a milestone marriage anniversary.
Alan and Betty Walker were married in St Cuthbert’s Church Hall, Hartlepool, on April 2, 1955 – 60 years ago – which means they have celebrated their Diamond Wedding anniversary.
We are both homebirds, I was never a club man. We enjoyed buying a carpet and we both enjoyed looking for things over a weekend.Alan Walker
The pair, who were the last couple to tie the knot in the church hall before matrimonial ceremonies began to be held in the church next door, met at The Rink – a dance hall in Hartlepool in the day.
After saying ‘I do’, the lovebirds moved into their first nest in the town’s Sheriff Street, with Betty moving from her home in Brenda Road, and Alan leaving Kingsley Avenue.
Betty, now 88, worked in the old Odeon cinema, and Alan, now 90, was a butcher for the Co-operative.
They went on to have three daughters who are now all in their 50s.
Today Alan said the twosome had a lovely time celebrating their big day at Gretton Court Nursing Home with a buffet with staff and other residents.
Alan said the secret to their long marriage was: “We are both homebirds, I was never a club man. We enjoyed buying a carpet and we both enjoyed looking for things over a weekend. We did things together.
“We were just together, it was just natural, that was it.”
