All ‘go’ as Hartlepool United fans head to Plymouth for fancy dress finale #PoolieThunderbirds

IT was all ‘go’ at Victoria Park yesterday as Poolies set off on a pilgrimage to Plymouth for the final away game of the season.

As has become tradition in recent seasons, the Hartlepool fans mark the occasion by turning up for the trip of the in fancy dress.

After Smurfs, Oompa Loompas and penguins made trips in the last three seasons, today’s game against The Pilgrims will see the Poolies kitted out as Thunderbirds characters.

Because of the distance of the trip - a mammoth 322-mile trek from The Vic to Home Park - many of the supporters set off on Friday.

And John Pearson, the fan who has the task of arranging the fancy dress theme each season, said the mood was good as the fans left Clarence Road.

“We’re all a bit more relaxed than we were this time last week after the win against Morecambe on Monday,” said John.

“We would have gone down to the game in a good mood anyway, but the fact we aren’t worried about relegation anymore makes it even better.

“There are 120 fans on the buses, and we have been told a lot of the fans from the south will be meeting us down there and they will be kitted out as Thunderbirds as well.

“It’s a helluva trek to Plymouth, it couldn’t have been any further away really, but I think we’re taking a decent number of fans down.

“It’s gets a bit stressful closer to the day of the game wondering if people will drop out and things like that, but it’s all gone smoothly so far and we’re looking forward to getting down there and cheering the lads on.”

The age range of the fans making the trip to the south west is from 10-70, and John says the last away game is one people always look forward to.

He added: “It’s a good laugh, it’s all about having fun and hopefully we can show the club in a good light as well.

“We have some good craic on the bus, it’s always fun when we get down to the game and hopefully the team will give us something to cheer.”
