AN intrepid sailor who became the first person to circumnavigate the Arctic Circle clockwise by boat is due to make a triumphant return to Hartlepool in days.
Jeffrey Allison, 73, completed the achievement after setting off from Hartlepool in the summer.
He is currently in Rovik, Norway, after being halted by bad weather but is expected to return to Hartlepool Marina on the 52ft vessel Eshamy by Friday.
Mr Allison, from Middleton Tyas, between Darlington and Richmond, completed the journey which took in Iceland, Greenland, around Alaska and Russia and then on to Scandinavia.
In 2009, the retired mining engineer was the first sailor to successfully negotiate the North West Passage around Greenland, Canada and Alaska in a fibreglass boat in one season.
