The trio were spotted carrying what was believed to a gun on a footpath at around 4.40pm, yesterday.
They had been walking in the Low Grange area of Billingham close to Wolviston Back Lane.
A spokesman for Cleveland Police said inquiries led officers to an address where it was confirmed the firearm was fake.
