A TALENTED athlete achieved a lifelong dream by qualifying for the world championships - but now fears he may have to pull out due to a lack of funding.

Matt Turnbull secured a spot at the Triathlon European Championships, in Kitzbuehel, Austria, in June.

But rather then rest on his laurels, an even bigger achievement was just round the corner as the 36-year-old qualified for the Duathlon World Championships, taking place in Spain next month.

But now the performing arts teacher admits he may have to withdraw from his biggest competition to date due to the fact he has to find around £700 to fund the trip in the coming weeks.

He is now appealing to town businesses to show their support and help him to achieve his dream.

“To achieve what I have done is way beyond my own expectations,” said Matt a former actor who lives in Seaton Carew with his wife Kelly and two children, Dylan, seven, and Ben, six.

“But when you put that much into it, to make the sacrifices to train day in day out and to have to withdraw would just be so soul destroying.

“I’m clinging on to the hope that I might get that support I need.

“I raised the cash for the European Championships but I just can’t afford to pay for the worlds as well.

“But I don’t want to miss out on a once in a lifetime opportunity.”
