May 31 will mark the anniversary of the Battle of Jutland. One of the ships involved was the battleship HMS Warspite which suffered considerable damage yet still managed to inflict the same on the German vessels Seydlitz and the Moltke.

The Heugh Battery in Hartlepool has a special reason to pay tribute as the two ships damaged by Warspite were among the three German vessels involved in the bombardment of Hartlepool.

To mark the battle, a 12ft model of HMS Warspite has gone on show at the museum and it has been lovingly restored by museum volunteers.

Battery volunteer Wally Stewart saud: “The model came to us in rather a sorry state but, after many hours and much very detailed work by the team, which included Glenn Baume, Bruce Brennan, Ken Laking and the late Alan West, it is, now, in a beautiful condition.”

Seydlitz, Moltke and Blucher were the three battle cruisers which had bombarded Hartlepool.

They shelled the town for 50 minutes and caused substantial damage as well as leaving 130 people dead.
