Claudio Ranieri’s team were given an uncomfortable 90 minutes by United, who pressed hard for an equaliser after the break.

But relegation-threatened Newcastle remain 19th in the Premier League, and a point adrift of safety, ahead of Sunday’s game against Sunderland.

Benitez, appointed late last week after the dismissal of Steve McClaren, saw positive signs in his team’s performance, though goalscoring remains a concern.

And he is confident he can “fix” some of problems he saw on the field between now and the derby.

“If you don’t win, I’m not happy,” said Benitez, whose name was chanted loudly by the club’s 1,334 travelling fans at the King Power Stadium.

“I’m happy with the performance of the players – the commitment, the work rate. We have to get results

“I could see a lot of positives, but we still have to improve and change correctly details that can make the difference.

“Our team is conceding goals and not scoring too many.

“We were attacking and creating. Now we have to improve also the understanding, the movements between players. We now have one week and we can fix some things.”
