Bishop of Durham set for three-day walk around Hartlepool

The Right Revd Paul Butler is starting on week two of the third set of prayer walks round his Diocese, aimed at allowing him to meet people, get to know the area and pray for it and its people.

Bishop Paul will take part in the second of two Prayer Walks this year following the fantastic successes of the walks in 2015 and 2016.

The prayer walks will continue on a periodic yearly basis until he has walked across all sixteen Deaneries of the Diocese.

The latest Prayer Walk is in the Hartlepool area starting today and follows a similar walk last week when he undertook thee days of walks in the Gateshead area.

The Bishop will visit a mix of places in and around Hartlepool including: A Mosque; The Seaside; Hartlepool Fish Quay; A trip in a RNLI Lifeboat; and the Royal Naval Museum HMS Trincomalee.

The Prayer Walks are designed to get out among the communities of the Diocese of Durham and to talk and pray with people where they are.

Bishop Paul said: “I love Prayer Walks because they are a great way to discover an area, meet its people and pray together with them.

“As we walk and pray together we seek to bless, and be blessed by, the people and communities that we visit. I hope that people will join me. It is fun, enjoyable and really rewarding to do.”

9.55 leave by Mill House exit (If there is time, walk up Raby Rd, Blake St, Rodney street then Murray St Lothian Rd)

12.20pm Church Street to asylum drop in centre

1pm CIL (Centre for Independent Living) at the end of Burbank Street, refreshments in the café, meet with clients and centre manager

2.15pm Newburn Bridge, walk along sea front

3pm Ice cream at Seaton Beach

3.25pm Young’s Fish Shop, 32 The Sea Front

3.45pm Station Lane via Jutland Road Housing Estate

4.30pm Rossmere Park – Prayers in Rossmere Park, Rossmere Way

From 6.30pm onwards - Belle Vue Club with the “Seatones” a 40’s memorabilia band. Tickets are available £5 per person.

9am - St Columba’s - mass depart from Columba’s and walk down Oxford Road, cutting through one of the streets to get to Cornwall Street, along Stockton Road, past Co-op funeral services, to Stranton (TS24 7QT), then to Burbank Street for open air service.

11am - Open Air service at Burbank, lunch then walk to Marina.

2pm Trincomalee visit at Historic Quay

3pm RNLI visit and out to sea

6pm - Confirmation service at St Hilda’s
